We are very lucky to live on the edge of the city. A two minute walk and you are in open fields leading surrounding areas of woodland. It was halfway around the block when I felt a tiny spark flicker through my consciousness, was this the start of an idea? Cutting through fields with my little Bruce, (If you’re a little dog you need a manly name!) with the idea growing with every step. By the time I got home that flicker had become a eureka! I realised how easy it would be to map our existing scheme of work, it needed a few small tweaks, but I could deliver essentially the same skills at the same time as everyone else, but use the Pearson materials for those groups, and focus more in depth on the evaluation questions. It also gave more validation to my action research project, as everything would be mirrored. I had a new heading, the wind was truly in my sails, I could navigate this course! I will be ready for the first week in September. I could actually do this! I would be the first teacher to deliver two different GCSE exam boards, for the same qualification, in our college group. All I had to do now was decide which students join me on this wonderful, new adventure!
I had 8 groups in 2021/22. It was agreed I could trial this lovely new Qual with 4 of my lower ability groups. These students would have sat Functional Skills in the past, making them my perfect target audience. I felt that If I could help just a few to achieve that all magical 4, it would prove to all that this shiny new qualification was worth the effort. I had the summer to plan it, so off I set-like an intrepid explorer, plotting my course as I went.
